The combination of the GoXLR audio interface and Rode PodMic is pretty popular for live streaming. But, connecting these two devices can be a bit tricky. So, let’s find out how to set up and connect Rode PodMic to GoXLR to get the best results for live streaming.
Follow these steps to have the perfect GoXLR and Rode PodMic setup.
GoXLR & Rode PodMic Gain Settings
1. Start with connecting the microphone to the GoXLR audio interface by plugging one end of an XLR cable into the back of the microphone and the other end into the back of the audio interface.
2. Open the mic set up inside the GoXLR software and select mic type as dynamic.
3. Set the Gain value at around 52-54dB. You might have to increase or decrease the Gain, depending on how loud your voice is.
4. Test your voice with this Gain value to see if it is in the “Good” area of the mic meter when you talk.
5. Reduce the Gain if it’s too loud.
6. Increase the Gain if it’s low.
GoXLR & Rode PodMic Noise Gate Settings
The Noise Gate is a great tool that automatically mutes the microphone when you’re not speaking. It will mute all the noises that don’t exceed a certain volume threshold.
You don’t necessarily have to use a noise gate; it’s best to use it when you’re trying to eliminate any background noise.
You can use the settings below if you do want to use the noise gate
- Threshold: -45 to -50 dB
- Attenuation: 50-75%
- Attack: 10ms (Default)
- Release: 200 ms (Default)
GoXLR & Rode PodMic EQ Settings
The purpose of EQ is to make the sound of your microphone clearer. But, if you don’t have game noise, it’s best to leave the EQ flat and let the Rode PodMic do the work.
If you’re mixing your microphone with game noise, the most important thing is making space for the game noise and ensuring that your microphone is clear when competing with those other sources.
We recommend the following settings for EQ to help the Rode PodMic sound great:
- 31.5 Hz: -9
- 63 Hz: -3
- 125 Hz: 0 (Default)
- 250 Hz: 0 (Default)
- 500 Hz: -2
- 1 KHz: 0
- 2 KHz: 1
- 4 KHz: 1
- 16 KHz: -4
GoXLR & Rode PodMic Compressor Settings
The compressor is like an auto mixer that makes your microphone’s loudest and quietest parts sound more neutral.
We recommend the following compressor settings for the Rode PodMic:
- Threshold: -15 dB
- Ratio: 3.2:1, for more aggressive compressor: 4:1
- Attack: 2 ms (default)
- Release: 100 ms (default)
- Make-up Gain: 5 dB
GoXLR & Rode PodMic DeEsser Settings
The DeEsser removes all the distracting mouth noises, clicks, etc. It also removes annoying S & T sounds.
We recommend setting the DeEsser to 50-60%.
